  • Our School Mascot:  Cougar

For those of you who are new to Commerce, we have been studying leadership traits based on the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (Kids) by Stephen Covey.  The 7 Habits are:

  • Be proactive
  • Begin with the end in mind
  • Put first things first
  • Think Win-Win
  • Seek first to understand, then to be understood
  • Synergize
  • Sharpen the saw

In addition to the 7 Habits, we will also have a school-wide theme that focuses on positive behavior expectations:  The Cougar Code - Be Respectful.  Be Kind.  Be Focused.  Be a LEADER!

Throughout the year, we will focus on each of these character traits.  Below is an overview of why each of these traits is important:

Be Respectful:  We will begin the year by reviewing routines, procedures, and expectations with "RESPECT" as our touchstone.  We will discuss what it means to be respectful in the hallways, on the bus, in the cafeteria, and in our classrooms.  It is important that we all make respectful choices at Commerce Elementary.

Be Kind:  At Commerce, it is important that we create a culture of caring.  Each and every one of us play an important role in creating that culture.  Developing character traits like empathy, kindness, compassion, and generosity are all important to becoming kids of character!

Be Focused:  You might be wondering...why is staying focused important?  Focus is an important character trait.  When we are focused, we don't give up even when a task is difficult.  We persevere and are goal-oriented.  Staying focused helps us to ignore distractions and develop self-control.

Be a LEADER!  There are all different types of leaders in the world.  Some people are quiet leaders and role models for others.  They lead by example.  Maybe they quietly help their friends or stick up for a friend who is being bullied.  Leaders also develop habits like the 7 Habits of Happy Kids.  At Commerce, we believe that there is a leader in each and every one of us!
