WLCSD adds Unified Basketball at all three high schools
Walled Lake Consolidated Schools is excited to bring Unified Sports to the district. Walled Lake Central, Northern and Western will all hit the court with unified basketball teams this winter.
“I am very excited to help bring Unified Sports to Walled Lake,” said WLCSD athletic director, Brian Swinehart. “Unified Sports are athletics in their purest form.”
Special Olympics of Michigan sponsors Unified Sports to support an inclusive sports program for Special Olympics athletes (individuals with disabilities) and partners (individuals without disabilities) as teammates. Unified Sports are dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.
Through collaboration in Unified Sports, athletes improve their social and behavioral skills while showcasing their potential, and partners develop a broader sense of compassion and understanding.
“I look forward to watching our teams compete, build camaraderie, establish relationships, and impact the culture of our buildings,” said Swinehart. “I hope everyone can attend a game and experience the joy it brings everyone in the gym.”
