Walled Lake Northern’s Emily Massat scores a perfect ten at regional gymnastics championships

Walled Lake Northern sophomore Emily Massat achieved perfection at the Xcel Regional Gymnastics Championships in Tallmadge, Ohio on May 5, 2023.

The Knights’ platinum level gymnast took home gold on the floor scoring a perfect 10 for her routine. The meet featured over 2,000 gymnasts from five different states, and Massat was the only gymnast to receive a 10.

The perfect 10 was widely considered unachievable until the 1976 Olympic Games, when 14-year-old Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci dazzled on the uneven bars. She was the first gymnast ever to be awarded a perfect 10 on the world’s biggest stage. Since, it has been an extreme rarity across all levels of gymnastics.
