Wixom Elementary’s Mission Statement
The staff of Wixom Elementary, in cooperation with the parents and community, will facilitate progressive learning through diverse experiences and challenges, in a safe and nurturing atmosphere, so all students will become lifelong learners who are responsible, knowledgeable, and adaptable citizens.
Wixom Elementary has an enrollment of approximately 390 students in grades K-5. Wixom also houses 2 Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) classrooms, 3 Great Start Readiness Programs (GSRP) classrooms, and a tuition-based preschool.
We have over 60 staff members which include classroom teachers, special education staff, paraprofessionals, and other support staff. Our teachers and staff at Wixom Elementary are a dedicated group of educators who work hard using current best practices to ensure that all of our students grow both academically and social-emotionally.
Wixom Elementary is located in Wixom, Michigan and is in the southwest corner of the Walled Lake Consolidated School District. All students at Wixom Elementary reside in the City of Wixom. However, we happily also welcome students from other areas with our School of Choice program. Wixom Elementary students feed to Sarah Banks Middle School and Walled Lake Western High School.
With the support of our PTA and parents, we are continuing our journey to become a fully-implemented Cultures of Thinking school based on the work of Ron Ritchhart from Harvard University. At our school we promote critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, perseverance, and adaptability in all of our students. As our students are empowered as independent and self-sufficient thinkers and learners, their achievement continues to grow. Through the collaborative efforts of everyone in our Wixom Elementary School Family, we work to meet the needs of every child, every day.
Our current building was originally built in the 1940’s with several additions occurring throughout the years. Most recently, our building benefited from safety, security, and technology upgrades including reconfiguring our entryway, enhanced video surveillance, and emergency management systems. Along with these security upgrades, our classrooms were also equipped with updated technology including interactive whiteboards and sound systems in each classroom and dedicated grade-level Chromebook carts for classroom use.
Academically, Wixom Elementary and the Walled Lake Consolidated School District provides a rigorous curriculum across all grades and subject areas. Our core beliefs about highly effective teaching and learning include:
building positive relationships within a supportive classroom community
relevant, engaging lessons that demonstrate the effective use of the formative assessment process
strategic integration of instructional technology
research-supported grading practices and assessments that reflect the belief that all students can demonstrate mastery with appropriate time and support adherence to a standards-aligned curriculum
